Sackl began his business career in 2007, when he founded Young Media at the age of 21. The business operated as a classified advertising platform aimed at younger audiences and local businesses. His later activities included property, recruitment, migration services, restaurants and other commercial ventures, before his work developed further into biotechnology and technology-related businesses.[2]
Early life and Young Media
Sackl was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. According to his published biography, his parents separated when he was young and he experienced difficulties during his teenage years. He subsequently left home, worked in a number of different jobs and began developing his first business after completing school.[3]
In 2007, at the age of 21, Sackl established Young Media. He initially sold advertising opportunities to local businesses before the website had been completed, using the advertising revenue received in advance to help finance the website's development. The company subsequently expanded into other Australian cities and was later sold.[4]
The eventual sale of Young Media subsequently became relevant to legal proceedings involving Sackl, including matters concerning the proceeds from the transaction and their treatment.[5]
Business career
Following the sale of Young Media, Sackl states that he entered property investment and housing development and later became involved in recruitment and migration services. His biography also records involvement in restaurants and several other businesses.[6]
Between October 2013 and December 2018, Sackl was a director of five companies: Dash Technologies Pty Ltd, Ad Astra Institute Pty Ltd, Karma3 Upcycling Pty Ltd, Sino Resources Group (Aust) Pty Ltd and Universal Personnel Pty Ltd.[7]
ASIC stated that the five companies operated in areas including software development, vocational education, animal-feed production, migration services and employment services.[8]
In May 2022, ASIC disqualified Sackl from managing corporations for three years and six months following the failure of the five companies.[9] ASIC reported that the companies had combined debts of A$2.9 million to creditors at the time of the decision. This amount included approximately A$830,000 owed to the Australian Taxation Office and A$118,800 owed to the Attorney-General's Department under the Fair Entitlements Guarantee.[10]
ASIC stated that Sackl had failed to meet several statutory obligations associated with his directorships. The matters identified included taxation, superannuation, workers' compensation insurance, financial record keeping and insolvency requirements.[11]
Sackl applied for a review of the ASIC decision through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in May 2022. He withdrew the application in March 2023. ASIC subsequently stated that his disqualification would remain in force until 3 November 2025.[12]
Agriculture
Sackl was involved in cattle production at Blue Lake Station in South Australia alongside Michael Famularo. In 2017, Blue Lake Station received the South Australian Most Outstanding Beef Producer award at the Meat Standards Australia Excellence in Eating Quality Awards.[13]
The award formed part of the Meat Standards Australia Excellence in Eating Quality Awards, which recognised producers and businesses participating in the MSA program in connection with meat eating quality.[14]
COVID-19 testing business
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sackl became involved in the development and distribution of diagnostic testing products. In his own account, his business initially obtained distribution rights for an antibody test kit and subsequently worked on an integrated testing pen intended for SARS-CoV-2 testing.[15]
Sackl states that the product was subsequently redesigned as a pen-shaped device incorporating the testing components and buffer fluid in a single format. He also states that the business entered into a supply agreement in 2021 and recorded approximately A$130 million in sales during 2021 and 2022.[16]
The sales figures are reported on Sackl's own website and are therefore presented here as figures stated by him rather than independently verified financial results.
Legal proceedings
Sackl has been involved in regulatory and criminal proceedings relating to aspects of his business activities.
Corporate disqualification
In May 2022, ASIC announced that Sackl had been disqualified from managing corporations for three years and six months following the failure of five companies in which he had served as a director.[17]
According to ASIC, the findings included failures involving taxes, superannuation and workers' compensation insurance premiums, as well as failures to maintain financial records and other breaches of directors' duties.[18]
The ASIC decision recorded that Sackl became bankrupt on 13 November 2020. It further stated that he had not been discharged from bankruptcy when the May 2022 decision was made.[19]
False testimony conviction
In a separate proceeding, Sackl pleaded guilty to a charge of giving false testimony in a federal judicial proceeding under section 35 of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth).[20]
On 3 April 2025, the County Court of Victoria imposed a total effective sentence of 18 months' imprisonment. The sentence provided for release after six months, subject to entering into a A$2,000 recognisance to be of good behaviour for three years.[21]
The judgment identifies Sackl as the defendant and records that the charge concerned false testimony given during federal judicial proceedings.[22]
Contemporary reporting linked the proceedings to a dispute involving financial proceeds from the sale of Young Media and statements made during family-law proceedings.[23]
Sackl's biography states that he served six months of the sentence before returning to the development of new business ventures.[24]
